TCS to make “Challenge the Dragon” debut

altOn Saturday, September 24th, Trinity College School is making its Challenge the Dragon” debut. This dragon boat festival is Northumberland United Way’s largest annual fundraising event and it takes place at the Cobourg harbour. TCS will be one of about 10 high school teams entered into this 34-team festival.

Given that this event takes place on Bear Fair there are some inherent challenges with getting a core group of 20 students who are able to commit to the day. So this year we have decided to start out with the Grade 10 fitness classes led by faculty members Ms. Angie Collins and Mr. Luke O’Connell. The hope is that, between these two classes, we will be able to have 20 paddlers for each race by running a bus back and forth to the School to accommodate students with athletic commitments. All students are attempting to raise a minimum of $35 for this important fundraising event.

The fitness students have practiced the dragon boat stroke “pool paddling” in class and they will head to the Cobourg harbour for a 5:30 p.m. practice in an actual dragon boat on Thursday this week. This practice will serve as an opportunity for students to experience what it will be like on race day.

If you have a chance to take a peek at what is happening at the Cobourg harbour on Saturday, please come by to cheer on the kids. Below is a schedule of events:

  • 9:00 a.m. – Race #1
  • 11:30 a.m. – Race in the Education Cup (if we are one of the top six education teams)
  • 11:40 a.m.-1:10 p.m. – Championship finals (TCS will have a race during this time span; the exact time will depend on our time from the first race)
  • 1:40 p.m. or 2:00 p.m. – Long distance 1500m race (if we make the top 12 teams based on our championship time)
