Bigside basketball wins TCS tournament for first time
|Tuesday, 17 January 2012|
This past weekend was an amazing experience for Trinity College School’s Bigside boys basketball team as the Bears not only hosted, but also won their own tournament. This is the first time the host team has taken the title in the 12-year history of the TCS Invitational.
Seven visiting teams travelled to Port Hope for the event, representing schools from across Ontario: Kenner (Peterborough), Woodstock C.I., Holy Trinity (Courtice), Oshawa Central, O'Neill (Oshawa), Renfrew, P.E.C.I. (Picton).
In the opening match the evening of Friday, January 13th, TCS hosted Renfrew in front of a packed house. After a slow start, the Bears’ full-court pressure began to overpower Renfrew, with TCS outscoring the visiting squad 44-12 over the second and third quarters. The final score was 69-28, with TCS high scorers including Devin Johnson (15 points), Hadi Abuzgaya (14) and Matt Sirois (9).
In the second game TCS faced Oshawa Central and jumped out to a quick lead, cruising to an easy win, 44-17. Leading scorers for TCS were: Hadi Abuzgaya (8) and Ehab Bakbak, Jaiden Winsor and Steven Wei (6 each). Connor McGorman had a strong defensive game with 13 rebounds.
For the championship final, TCS faced O'Neill C.I. who also won its first two games of the tournament convincingly. The Bears again jumped out to an early lead and never looked back. Bigside employed strong defensive play and excellent teamwork on the offensive end to completely overpower a talented opponent. Devin Johnson led all scorers with 18 and four other players chipped in 6 points apiece. Strong games were also had by Matt Sirois and Idy Udoeyeop.
