Swinging into the Christmas season at annual charity concert

The holiday spirit was in abundance at the annual Christmas Benefit Concert, hosted by the Trinity College School music department the evening of Friday, December 14th in the Dick and Jane LeVan Theatre. Audiences were treated to many seasonal songs, and also gave generously at the door to support the local Fare Share Food Bank.

The Grade 9 Concert Band kicked off the evening with two Christmas offerings: Bach’s Jesu, Joy of Man’s Desiring and C’est Noel, by French Canadian composer Andre Jutras. Next up was the Trinity Strings ensemble, under the direction of Mr. Ciprean Mihailescu, performing selections from Tchaikovsky’s Nutcracker Suite.

The Trinity Quartet and Guitar Ensemble joined up to present Gerardo Matos Rodriguez’s well-known tango, La Cumparsita, as well as No One, the theme music to the series Ouroboros, composed by Kimura Hideakira. This second number was transcribed by Grade 12 student Lidan Zheng, a member of the quartet.

A section of the concert shone a spotlight on our Grade 12 musicians, including works for which the arrangements were done by the students, including Harrison Wou, Jayden Levebvre and Edward Li.

Trinity Singers took the stage to sing Angels by R&B sensation Khalid, followed by Sufjan Stevens’ take on the hymn Holy, Holy, Holy, and the Christmas classic Winter Wonderland, in which the audience was invited to sing along.

Jazz@4 closed out the night with three fun numbers: Herbie Hancock’s Watermelon Man, Frank Loesser’s Baby It’s Cold Outside and Vince Guaraldi’s timeless music from A Charlie Brown Christmas.

Congratulations are due to our student-musicians and to TCS music teachers and ensemble directors Mr. Jeff Biggar and Mrs. Nicola Lee, as well as faculty member Ms. Rachel Pearson (who conducts the Trinity Winds with Mrs. Lee). Thanks go to Mr. Greg MacPherson (lighting), Mr. Christian McFadden (sound) and to the music stewards (stage management).

Gratitude also goes to everyone who came out to enjoy the show and to support our local food bank in its mission to support families in need, especially during this holiday season.
