Winter Fulford brings out the best in student debaters

Trinity College School debaters headed to the winter tournament of the Fulford League, held at Upper Canada College on Saturday, February 9th. Dating back to 1948, the league currently includes 19 member independent schools who compete in three tournaments each academic year.

An interesting aspect of the Fulford league is that new debaters must represent the School at each tournament over the course of the year. The Fulford format includes three rounds of debate, with Juniors participating in traditional parliamentary style debates, while the Seniors get to experience both cross-examination and parliamentary styles. At both levels, students have the opportunity to try impromptu as well as researched debates, with the winter tournament resolution being that “governments should not intervene in oil pipeline construction.”

For Saturday’s contest, TCS sent the Junior team of Loretta Hu and Mitchell Wong, both of whom were taking part in their first inter-school competition. The Senior team was comprised of Jack Zhang and Julia Jenkins, with Julia having a strong tournament, placing eighth overall.

The debaters are looking forward to the third and final Fulford League event of the school year, scheduled for Saturday, April 6th at Ridley College. Our competitive debaters will also take part in the Ontario Student Debating Union Senior Provincial Debating Championships, to be held February 22nd to 24th in Ottawa.
