Student-musicians share the joy of music

The past week has been filled with the joy of music, as Trinity College School students showcased their talents for audiences throughout our community.

On February 28th and March 1st, student-musicians from the Trinity Winds, Johnson Ringers, Trinity Singers and Jazz@4 performed community concerts for elementary students and seniors. On Thursday, students headed to Peterborough, and Friday they welcomed about 150 guests to Cirne Commons to listen to music and enjoy refreshments. The concerts are part of the music department’s commitment to giving back, which also includes annual participation in the December Week Without Walls program, allowing our students to share their love of music with the broader community.

Then, on Monday, March 3rd, TCS once again hosted its annual Jazz Festival. Each year, this event sees bands from our peer schools join Jazz@4, the TCS Senior jazz band, for a day of adjudicated performances. This year Ms. Nicola Lee and the TCS music students welcomed bands from Bowmanville High School (Junior and Senior bands) and Thomas A. Stewart Secondary School (jazz combo and band). Thank you to Mr. Vincent Abrahamse and Ms. Jessica Hudson and their musicians for joining us!

A special highlight for students was the chance to have their performances reviewed by celebrated Canadian trombonist William Carn. Mr. Carn has been nominated five times as “Trombonist of the Year” by the National Jazz Awards, and is a two-time Juno nominee. His resume includes jazz, musical theatre and classical work, and he has played with Canadian and international musicians and actors, from Jeff Healy and Colin James to Frankie Valli and Joan Rivers. A music educator at University of Toronto and Humber College, his insights were invaluable to our student-musicians as they work to hone their craft.

The TCS music department has a busy spring ahead, so mark your calendar for upcoming performances including the Spring Benefit Concert on Friday, April 26th, and Jazz Night on Friday, April 3rd!
