Historic events join forces to fight cancer

This year’s 124th running of the Oxford Cup took on fresh purpose as the 5 km race joined forces with the annual Terry Fox Run at Trinity College School. The new Oxford Cup in Support of the Terry Fox Run was held under sunny skies on Friday, September 20th, and perfectly intertwined the purposes of these two traditional events: to gather our community together in celebration of healthy, active living, and to carry on Terry Fox’s dream of a world without cancer.

Junior and Senior School students and staff were joined by family members and alumni to run, walk or jog the Hedney-Geale Trail. Many wore stickers dedicating their run to loved ones whose lives have been affected by cancer. This year marks the 39th anniversary of Terry Fox’s Marathon of Hope, and the TCS community was proud to join in the nationwide effort to raise funds for cancer research.

In addition to raising funds to continue Terry’s mission of finding a cure for cancer, the traditional Oxford Cup prizes were also awarded. Grade 9 student Liam Gibson was the first person across the finish line, winning the Oxford Cup in a time of 19:05.23. The Wright Cup for top female student went to Grade 12 student Fiona Shearing, who conquered the course in 23:53.92. The Saul Cup, awarded to the top male and female Junior School students, went to Grade 8 student Aidan Small (second in the race overall at 19:37.74) and Grade 7 student Ruby Campbell (27:01.47), both of whom hoisted the trophy last year. And Mr. Courtney Christ ’95 continued his streak as top Old Boy, running a time of 19:45.42 to take the Dr. Richard Boyd Memorial Trophy, while Ketchum Assistant Housemaster Taylor Herrington ’13 was the top Old Girl, earning the Saul Cup in a time of 29:28.94.

There’s still time to support the fight against cancer. The deadline for online donations is Friday, September 27th (visit www.terryfox.ca/TrinityCollegePortHope and be sure to indicate a student’s name and house affiliation so totals for the house competition can be tracked). As well, our students will be hosting fundraising events on campus throughout the month of October.
