Trinity College School was thrilled to host its Bigside boys basketball invitational tournament for the first time in three years. The Bears welcomed seven teams to the Arnold Massey ’55 Athletic Centre from January 13th to 14th.

Joining TCS on the courts were Cobourg Collegiate Institute, St. Mary CHS (Cobourg), O’Neill Collegiate (Oshawa), Appleby College (Oakville), Thorold SS, Courtice HS and Nicholson CC (Belleville).

TCS opened the tournament against CCI on Friday night in front of a packed crowd! The prefects had organized sign-painting prior to the tip-off, and the home fans were eager to cheer on the Bears. Their support was rewarded as, despite foul trouble, TCS won comfortably by a score of 51-35. Lana Agbelese led the team in scoring with 15 points while Cheuk Lam and Jonathan Lolomari contributed 10 each. Cheuk also added five assists and five steals.

In the semi-finals TCS faced Thorold, jumping out to a quick start and leading the entire game to notch a 50-43 win. Jack Brumley led the team with an impressive 18 points, 10 rebounds and five blocks. Lana netted 11 points and Cheuk added five assists and six steals.

The win put the Bears into the final, where they squared off against O’Neill. Although TCS led much of the game, O’Neill made a timely run late to take a 57-52 victory. Jack and Lana once again led the team in scoring with 19 and 12 points, respectively. Philippe Dulac and Cheuk both has six assists.

The Bears were proud of their silver medal performance and excited to get back into the CISAA league season, where they have had a strong showing thus far. Over the course of December and early January, the team has posted league wins over Royal St. George’s (69-16), Hillfield Strathallan (76-45) and Greenwood (80-35).
