Pink Shirt Day is a reminder to lead with kindness

“Lift Each Other Up!” That was the theme of this year’s Pink Shirt Day, and at Trinity College School, community members were keen to show their intention to lead with kindness on Thursday, February 23rd. Even in the midst of a winter snowstorm, warmth and friendship were front and centre in the conversation, as both Junior and Senior School students and staff donned their pink shirts for the day.

In the Senior School, Trinity Students for Social Justice encouraged support for the anti-bullying campaign, with TSSJ leader Amelia Maggi explaining, “Pink Shirt Day was inspired by the kindness of a group of high school students in 2007 who organized a protest to wear pink in sympathy with a male student who was bullied for doing so. The day gained popularity and became recognized across Canada as a day to challenge bullying.” What began with a simple act of kindness at a Nova Scotia high school is now honoured annually in more than 110 countries.

TSSJ asked peers to consider donating to the CKNW Kids’ Fund in support of anti-bullying programs, through online contributions or donation boxes set up around the School.

The Senior School library had its button machine on hand so that students could make a pin to show support for Pink Shirt Day.

Earlier in the week, Junior School students presented a special assembly on the history and importance of Pink Shirt Day, organized by Mr. Trevor Findlay, student & academic support coordinator.
