Trinity College School’s Gender & Sexuality Alliance (GSA) joined the global movement to stamp out hate on Wednesday, May 17th, as initiatives were hosted in the Senior School to mark the International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia and Biphobia.

GSA co-leader Madison Miller notes, “This day was created in 2004 to bring awareness to the violence and discrimination experienced by people within the LGBTQ+ community. This day is currently celebrated in more than 130 countries. May 17th was chosen to commemorate the World Health Organization’s decision in 1990 to declassify homosexuality as a mental disorder and has continued to be celebrated since. On this day, people are encouraged to take action, whether big or small, including educating themselves.”

The GSA encouraged the Senior School to take part in a rainbow colours dress down day, with each grade, plus staff, assigned specific bright colours to wear. GSA also hosted a bake sale during morning break, in Cirne Commons. Funds raised are being donated to EGALE Canada.

The GSA stressed the importance of learning more about issues affecting the LGBTQ+ community, including through the following organizations:

  • The Trevor Project – providing information and support for LGBTQ+ youth
  • EGALE Canada – dedicated to eradicating homophobia, biphobia and transphobia
  • GLAAD – working to ensure fair, accurate and inclusive representation of the LGBTQ+ community in the media
  • Pflag Canada – founded to support family members of LGBTQ+ people
