School Size Matters

Submitted by sgrainger on

Part one of a series of three blog posts

In addition to our school’s shared mission, the enrolment and composition of the student body of our school community determines, to a very great extent, the programs, staffing, culture and ethos at Trinity College School.

Our mission statement is developing habits of the heart and mind for a life of purpose and service.” Our total enrolment total at TCS is 592.

Over the course of this post and my subsequent two blog posts, it is my intention to help parents and alumni better understand (1) the composition, (2) the rationale and (3) the implications of our school size.

Let’s get started with “the numbers”:

Our Junior School has 104 students this year. There is one Grade 5 class of 18 students and one Grade 6 class of 20 students. There are 30 Grade 7 students split between two classes and two Grade 8 classes comprising 36 students. Our Junior School students come from the Peterborough area, Durham region, Brighton, Cobourg and Port Hope.

Our Senior School has 488 students whom are associated with one of 10 houses (with houses hosting approximately 50 students each). There are 100 students in Grade 9, 128 in Grade 10, 138 in Grade 11 and 122 in Grade 12, of which 205 are day students and 283 are boarders. Like many of our Junior School students, plenty of our Senior School day students arrive via bus each day.

As for our boarding students, 138 are those who live in Canada and 145 are those who reside outside of our country. Our Canadian boarding students come from the provinces of Alberta, Ontario, New Brunswick, Nunavut and Quebec; our international students come from one of 25 countries including, but not limited to the Bahamas, China, Germany, Hong Kong and Nigeria.

So there you have it! The intentional composition of our diverse school community. In next week’s blog post, I will explain why the School has chosen to have this size of student body and composition. Stay tuned!
