Reunion Eve

Submitted by sgrainger on

As a kid, I loved Christmas Eve more than Christmas Day. Perhaps it was because the anticipation on December 24th of Santa Claus and his accompanying magic was far greater than the disappointing reality experienced on December 25th of not having the necessary batteries to power my new battery-operated toy.

Similarly, as an adult, spring is my favoured season over summer. Spring is when I get to look ahead, enjoying the potential of approaching holiday time and an improved golf game, as opposed to the usual reality of hot and hazy summer days and another poor golf score.

In short I enjoy planning and projecting ahead to future experiences.

The timing of our graduation events and ceremonies, being so close to our alumni events in any given calendar year, is a most interesting circumstance. The events of this Reunion Weekend (involving graduates from the class of 1953 to 2018) start on Friday, May 26th and end on Sunday, May 28th; our graduation chapel service to commemorate the Leaving Class of 2023 (one of our last morning chapel services of the school year, attended by students and staff only) is on May 30th. Only two days later.

Alumni, the world over, are returning to campus to look back and reminisce affectionately about the “good old days” or “days of yore” of five to 50+ years ago. Our graduates, meanwhile, are looking ahead to their next five months as being life-changing; and the next five or 50+ years down the road, in many ways, seem unimaginable.

What an interesting initiative it would be to have our 340 returning alumni come together for a chat with our 122 soon-to-be graduates on the precipice of reunion eve and graduation eve. What incredible conversations, observations, reflections, advice and insights would be on offer on such an occasion!

But, wait!

In five more years they will be all together! At Reunion Weekend 2028.

Now, that is something to look forward to.
