What is your life motto: In my first year of teaching one of my students gave me a notebook that said, "Let life surprise you." I've really taken a liking to that view of accepting the journey however it unfolds.

What is one thing that you have done in your life that even surprises you? I never expected that my "gap year" after second year at Dalhousie would turn into over a decade of living overseas. I also never expected to leave Australia after 19 years and move back to Canada. My mom didn't either but she is thrilled.

What did you want to be when you grew up? I very seriously wanted to be an astronaut around Grades 8 and 9 but gave that up when I saw the ocean for the first time at 15 and chose to study marine biology at university.

On a deserted island, what three things would you take with you? If survival was not my main objective, I would bring as much music as I possibly could, a hammock and...can I bring a dog? I've never had a dog but I would also bring a dog for company.
