What will happen if a case of COVID-19 is reported in the school community?

The School will be undertaking daily health care screening of all students and staff. The School's screening form aligns with the province of Ontario’s COVID-19 self-assessment tool. Students and staff must not attend school if they are experiencing any symptoms of ill health.

It is important to note, in the event of a confirmed case of COVID-19 within our school, public health is responsible for contacting every individual (or parent/guardian) who has tested positive for COVID-19 for follow-up and notifies the School of a positive COVID-19 diagnosis within our school population. Where public health determines that there was a transmission risk to others in the school, public health will advise of the next steps required (14-day isolation off-campus or monitoring). Testing may be recommended by public health to those required to isolate; however, testing is voluntary. It is important to note that a negative test result does not change the requirement for isolation nor shorten the isolation period for those public health has identified as close contacts. TCS is committed to fully supporting public health in their contact tracing efforts by providing records related to attendance, class lists, busing, contact information for parents/guardians and staff, and other appropriate records.

Public health is responsible for determining if an outbreak exists, declaring an outbreak, and providing direction on outbreak control measures to be implemented. The situation will be assessed by local public health authorities, and public health will assist in determining which students and staff (individuals and/or cohorts) may be required to isolate off-campus for 14 days.

The School is committed to partnering with public health, and are responsible for reporting probable or confirmed COVID-19 cases associated with the School. In the case of a confirmed case of COVID-19, TCS will support public health as they are responsible for case and contact management. The School has a layered strategy for the tracking of student movement to support contact tracing.

Parents, students and staff have an understandable interest in knowing when a COVID-19 positive case has been identified in the School. The School will use email to promptly notify families in such a case. In addition, schools are required to create a COVID-19 advisory section on their website and to post information if there is a confirmed case of COVID-19 that involves a student or staff member. The COVID-19 Advisory page can be found here.

The role of public health in managing suspected or confirmed cases of COVID-19 has been articulated by the Province of Ontario through its Operational guidance: COVID-19 management in schools. While this document uses language that is specific to public education, it is also applicable to independent schools. TCS has been in frequent discussions with our local public health unit with regard to our health and safety protocols, re-opening plans, and to further establish clarity regarding our roles in the case of a confirmed case of COVID-19 within our community.
