Melanie and her husband Ralph have been the owner/operators of a Canadian Tire dealership since 1994, first in Alberta, then in Toronto before settling in Cobourg in 1999. In March 2016, they took ownership of a new store in Winnipeg, Manitoba.

Expanding their retail expertise into furniture was a seven-year venture in Kingston with LaZBoy Furniture Galleries where they did a ground-up build. That business won a corporate best new concept store award and eventually was sold in 2010.

Melanie is very active in her local church and community serving in various capacities during her time in Cobourg, including involvement with: leadership conferences, visioning and planning teams, pastoral search and nominating committees, music teams and youth events, soup kitchen, Northumberland Hills Hospital galas, Habitat for Humanity, the Syrian refugee relocation team and federal Conservative campaign volunteer.
