Hockey – Boys

Trinity College School’s boys hockey program includes two teams. The Varsity team, or Bigside, is typically made up of older and more experienced players. Our second team, or Junior Varsity, is a springboard to playing at the Bigside level and is open to all grades. For complete information on the Bigside boys hockey team (including roster, schedule and scores), click here.

The training season starts in early September for both teams, while competition normally runs from October to March Break. Our teams play in the Conference of Independent Schools Athletic Association (CISAA), a league made up of independent schools from across Ontario. The 2018-2019 season saw both teams return to Division I after a 14-year hiatus (having played in Division II). They play a 10-12 game regular season schedule, plus playoffs. We supplement the league schedule with exhibition games as well as four or five tournaments, for a total of 40-50 games each season for the Bigside team, and 35-40 games for the Junior Varsity team.

  • Between games, practices and off-ice sessions, the teams are together at least five times per week – typically on the ice four times. This provides an ideal ratio of two practices to every game day. In total, the Bigside team is on the ice over 100 times during the season, beginning in early September with advanced skills sessions.
  • Dedicated skating sessions take place throughout the season.
  • Off-ice training programs are designed to develop strength, conditioning and, most importantly, overall athletic ability.
  • A built-in video system in our rink is used for honing team systems and tactics.
  • Support for players interested in pursuing hockey after TCS is provided.
  • Dedicated goalie sessions with a goalie coach are provided.

Coach Minnings has led his teams to multiple OMHA championship tournaments as well as to two OHL Cup appearances, while helping guide some of his players toward realizing their hockey dreams of being drafted and/or playing in the OJHL, USHL, NCAA, OHL and NHL.

Junior Varsity Hockey Coaches

Trevor Clark '10
Coach Clark returned to our Junior Varsity team in 2019, bringing five years of coaching experience to the program. An accomplished player, Mr. Clark was named team MVP in both his two years with the Bigside team when he was a student at TCS.

Richard Abbott
Coach Abbott moved from an assistant position with our Bisgide team to become associate coach of our Littleside team in 2019. Mr. Abbott played three years of Junior A hockey in northern Ontario while attending Nipissing University. He was an accomplished offensive player with the Temiskaming Titans of the GMHL scoring 1.94 points per game.

We are very fortunate to have our own arena on campus. The Peter Campbell Memorial Rink provides us ample ice time to support four teams and the Bigside (Varsity) and Littleside (Junior Varsity) team have a dedicated dressing room with individual compartments (“stalls”) for players to store equipment for the season. The rink is often available during the day, after school and on weekends for informal practice and shinny sessions.

TCS’s athletic facilities also include eight full-size multi-purpose fields for football, soccer, rugby, cricket and field hockey, an indoor pool and a 5km cross-country running course that hosted the 2002 and 2017 Ontario high school championships. Our new athletic centre (2017) includes such facilities as a resistance and cardio training room, three new gymnasiums (for a total of five) and two new squash courts (for a total of five), in addition to classroom, changeroom and office space. There is ample opportunity for our hockey players to train both in and out of season. TCS also has a new, state-of-the-art physiotherapy clinic on campus, staffed full time by two certified athletic therapists.

Our coaching staff works diligently to identify student-athletes who we feel will fit into our school program. Above all, we look for hockey players who are strong academically and can handle the rigours of a full hockey schedule and a complete academic program. We also believe that good hockey players are born from good athletes – athletes who can excel in different sports – and all of our players are expected to be contributors on spring teams.
