Refrigeration Plant & Rink Operator

Trinity College School is currently looking for a dynamic Refrigeration Plant and Rink Operator to join our property maintenance team. This position reports to the Director of Property and is accountable for the operation, maintenance and repair of building systems equipment and facilities and other equipment as necessary. As a member of a diverse team, the successful candidate must be a team player and strong collaborator and also have the ability to work independently and troubleshoot issues as they arise. This is a permanent, full-time position which may include a rotating work schedule during the fall and winter, including evenings and weekends. Pay commensurate with experience.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Prepare, maintain and remove ice surfaces as well as monitor and adjust the refrigeration equipment (requires prior experience using an ice resurfacer and ice edger and power/hand tools)
  • Operate the rink ammonia refrigeration systems as outlined in the TSSA regulations
  • Carry out various maintenance duties including, but not limited to: plumbing and minor HVAC and electrical maintenance
  • Operate building systems, document system conditions and report abnormal conditions
  • Compile and maintain all information and documentation relevant to all completed work
  • Determine impact of required work, communicate, co-ordinate major repairs to minimize service interruptions
  • Observe all applicable Health and Safety regulations and ensure that all work is performed in full compliance with Standard Operating Procedures, work instructions and established safety standards
  • Recommend and maintain inventory of spare parts
  • Oversee contractors in the repair and maintenance of compressors, condensers and boilers
  • Perform scheduled preventative and predictive maintenance services; diagnose machinery and equipment to detect and investigate irregularities and malfunctions
  • Conduct facility inspections on a regular basis and provide routine maintenance support for other campus buildings
  • In the off season, perform grass cutting and other grounds keeping activities
  • Complete work orders and equipment reports
  • Provide training/task supervision to temporary and part-time staff
  • Perform any other duties as assigned

Qualifications

The successful candidate must possess experience, knowledge and be familiar with the maintenance and operations of rinks and the ice making process. Familiarity with Zamboni ice refinishing equipment and the Zamboni level ice system would be a definite asset. Required qualifications include:

  • Class B Refrigeration Certification is required. Certified Ice Technician (CIT) accreditation is considered an asset.
  • Must have a minimum of Grade 12 (an equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered)
  • Previous training and/or practical experience in facility and arena maintenance
  • Possess a Class B Refrigeration ticket as required by TSSA
  • Possess an Ontario Driver’s Class “G” License in good standing
  • Minimum of five years proven hands-on experience in operating, maintaining, repairing and troubleshooting of systems such as: ammonia chillers, rink dehumidifiers, HVAC, etc.
  • Computer literate with experience using Microsoft Office Suite
  • Team player with good organization, time management, interpersonal and communication skills 
  • Customer service oriented
  • Capable of carrying out the assigned duties with a minimum of supervision and with a high sense of responsibility
  • Must be willing to provide a criminal and vulnerable sector background check
