Trinity College School was represented by four strong members of the debate team at the Ontario Student Debating Union (OSDU) Senior Provincial Championships, hosted by Appleby College, February 23rd to 25th. Led by chaperones Greg MacPherson (debate coach) and Allyn Whitehead, the two TCS teams of Hibah T. and Haron W., and Roger Z. and Arjun S. squared off against debaters from across the province.

The tournament includes two rounds of prepared debates, and four impromptu rounds, with debaters tackling some challenging and timely topics. Examples of resolutions included: “This House prefers regional trading blocs (NAFTA, the EU, ASEAN) over global free trade”; and “This House, as a progressive female candidate, would not use conventional gender roles (e.g., marketing oneself as a wife and mother) as a tactic in political campaigns.”

Our students were up against some of the top debaters in the province and performed well. They should be very proud of their efforts!
