Arts Week offers exploration and inspiration
  • Collage of arts activities

Music – dance – theatre – visual arts – film. All of these and more were celebrated during the annual Arts Week at Trinity College School, held April 22nd to 26th. From evening concerts to fun daily activities, students and staff had the chance to experience and interact with the arts, and to appreciate our students’ talents and creativity.

The week got off to a fast start on Monday, with the Trinity Environmental Action Club (TEAC) Earth Day house art challenge. The Senior School houses faced off in creating sculptures of endangered species made from recyclable items. Then, at flex, there was a fun painting competition where students painted creative portraits of their peers in costume.

That afternoon, music students took part in a special clinic and a piano masterclass with Juno Award winning jazz musician Robi Botos, made possible through the D. Miles Price ’56 Guest Musician Fund. "His experience, musicality and generous personality inspired us all," said Senior School music teacher, David Ioannou. Mr. Botos stayed on to collaborate with our student-musicians in Monday’s Jazz Night concert, featuring Jazz@4 and the TCS Jazz Choir, in the Dick & Jane LeVan Theatre.

Tuesday’s events included drawing workshops led by student-artists, a group guitar lesson and jam session, and an exhibition of works by students in the Advanced Placement Art & Design course.

On Wednesday, there was a “Flash Mob” featuring the Dance Team. As well, in conjunction with Denim Day, a “Making Your Mark” activity allowed students to apply artwork to jeans. Denim Day was hosted by Trinity Students for Social Justice to raise awareness and show support for victims of sexual assault.

Wednesday night, we rolled out the red carpet for more than 70 attendees at the gala TCS Film Festival in the Dick & Jane LeVan Theatre. Organized by Grade 12 student Henry S. and the Arts Council, this event saw the screening of four student films, with guest judges including community members involved in the film world: Phillip Whan Tong '23, Carl Thiel '85 and Lesley Myers P'26. Film Access Northumberland Chair Ross Pigeau was a special guest speaker. Congratulations to the student film directors: Henry S., Sam S., Will B., Jony H., Serar O., Wolfgang V. and Judy H.

Another busy day on Thursday began with a costume contest in chapel, for which students were encouraged to dress in arts-inspired outfits, from concert t-shirts to dressing up like their favourite artist. There was an arts trivia Kahoot in the morning, and during afternoon flex block, the characters from the TCS spring musical, Shrek, paraded through Cirne Commons and a video trailer for the play (which runs May 23rd to 25th) was shown on the big screen.

In the evening, the annual Spring Concert took place in the Dick & Jane LeVan Theatre. Not only did this event showcase our wonderful student-musicians, but it also raised funds for SONG, a music education program for local youth. "The Spring Concert was a joyous event, the culmination of all the hard work the music students have put in throughout the year," said Mr. Ioannou. "All the acts were fantastic. They had fun, played well and they should all be proud of themselves. Thank you to Ms. Rachel Pearson (music teacher), and all the co-curricular music instructors, Anna Mastin, Michael Beauclerc and Chip Mihailescu for this wonderful night."

The week wrapped up on Friday as the arts department hosted a life drawing session in the Hawkins Mezzanine in the morning, in which more than 20 students participated. This event was special as an audience of international educators, guests of the admissions office, were able to see our student-artists in action. There was jazz music for all to listen to in Cirne Commons, courtesy of our student-musicians. And in the afternoon, drama workshops were offered.

It was such a fun week, filled with so many opportunities to learn about, appreciate and explore the arts. Thank you to the Arts Council, the Senior School arts faculty and co-curricular arts group leaders, and to all of the students and staff who organized or took part in the week’s events!
