Introduced in 2015, in commemoration of Trinity College School’s 150th anniversary, the Hunter Scholarships are awarded to two promising students who reside in Durham Region, Peterborough or Northumberland County, who are applying to Grade 9. These are the first full-tuition scholarships TCS has offered to Canadian day students. In 2022, Lew Cirne '89 gifted the School with the resources to offer an additional full day scholarship, bringing the total to three awards. The scholarships are merit-based and include full tuition for the duration of the recipients’ studies in the day school program at Trinity College School. The recipients of these scholarships must exhibit academic excellence, leadership potential, and the desire to become engaged in all aspects of the TCS community.

- OLSAT test over 70th percentile
Requirements for Application
- Complete the regular application process to Trinity College School by Friday, February 16, 2024.
- Write a letter or essay stating why the applicant feels they are a good candidate and would be a worthy recipient of the scholarship (limit of 500 words) - due by Friday, February 23, 2024.
- Based on the application and essay, a short list of 3-5 candidates will be selected for a second interview with the TCS awards committee.
- These scholarships are given at the discretion of the TCS awards committee. The selection of recipients is not based solely on academic achievement, but also focuses on a candidates' perceived ability to contribute to the school community.
Expectations of the Recipients
- Maintain a minimum 80% academic average
- Be involved in all three terms of co-curricular activities
- Engage in leadership opportunities throughout their TCS career and act a role model for peers
- Embrace TCS values and live up to TCS standards
Each scholarship recipient’s performance will be evaluated each year at the time of their second report card (February) and if all expectations are being met, the scholarship will be renewed for the following year.
History of the Hunter Scholarships
The Donald F. Hunter family has a long and distinguished history at Trinity College School spanning three generations and more than 20 family members. Donald H. Hunter ’67 led the establishment of the two Hunter Scholarships. He and his wife Jane are residents of Northumberland County and formerly lived in the Cayman Islands.
The first scholarship was established in 1978 with funding from the Donald F. Hunter Foundation. The scholarship initially focused on supporting outstanding boarding students from the Cayman Islands. In 2015, the focus of the scholarship changed to supporting local, Canadian day students. In 2018, a second scholarship was funded by Jane and Donald H. Hunter ’67.
