Students offer a crash course in Caribbean culture

Trinity College School students escaped the winter weather and headed south to celebrate Islander culture at the annual dance hosted by the Caribbean Council the evening of Saturday, January 13th.

Our Islander students created a night of fun and friendship, under the theme of “Caribbean Crash.” Held in the upper gym, the space was colourfully decorated by students with flags, lights, inflatable decorations and beach balls. Participants were encouraged to dress in the colours of the flag of their Islander home country or a country they associated with (e.g. the Islander home country of a friend), further adding to the vibrant feel.

To get everyone excited about the event, several chapel announcements and emails were created, as well as a poster, and music was played during lunch on Friday in Osler Hall. On Saturday evening, it was DJ Wickham who turned out the tunes, including an emphasis on Caribbean artists and music.

When students weren’t dancing, they could be found posing with friends at the photo booth, or enjoying the snacks provided, including specialty beverage concoctions featuring favourites such as Ting and a Blue Lagoon mocktail. A quiet space was available for students wishing to take a break from the action, and games including dominoes (a favourite in many Caribbean countries) were available.

Thank you to our Islander students and Caribbean Council leaders Hannah Bodden and Jay Turnquest, for providing this chance for everyone to celebrate Islander culture and have a great evening with friends. Shout-outs to the facilities and culinary services teams for their support, and to everyone in the community – from the prefects who lent a hand with set-up to the house staff who served as chaperones – for creating a wonderful night!
