It was an evening of artistry, collaboration and high-stepping energy as the Trinity College School Dance Team presented its annual show –Dance the Night Away – February 22nd and 23rd in the Dick and Jane LeVan Theatre. Over two nights, the Dance Team, along with the Activity for Life dance club, delighted audiences with numbers across a range of styles and musical genres.

The TCS Dance Team is an auditioned ensemble which practices regularly and, in addition to working towards its annual show, also takes part in competitions. This year’s members are Jayne Acharya, Ruby Campbell, Aeowyn Comissiong, Alex Fletcher, Judy Huang, Hannah Obomighie, Liv Petrolito, Chelsea Qu, Summer Shea, Serena Tang, Margot van Dyke, Alya Wilson, Ruby Zheng, and Dance Captains Jada Johnson and Hannah van Gennip.

The AFL dance club meets each Thursday as part of the co-curricular arts program, and includes Elyse Brown, Ariana Coombs, Fiona Hartleib, Paige Magwood, Maddie Marcotte, Anni Campbell Nikolovsky, Grace Papp and Liv Petrolito.

Both ensembles are led by TCS residential assistant Katie Traugott, a gifted dancer, choreographer and dance instructor.

The show opened with a bang, as the full dance team performed to the electronic dance sounds of Yeah, Yeah, Yeahs’ Heads Will Roll. This was the first of several numbers choreographed by Ms. Traugott, while other routines were created by instructors from the community: Kareem Byfield, Monica Sorbara, Brandy Harmer, Chantelle Carr (Premiere Dance Cobourg) and Courtney Belair Ogle.

In many cases, the dances were produced by the students themselves, working collaboratively on small group routines to select music, create choreography and choose lighting and costumes.

The program was packed with diverse dance styles and music from around the world, showcasing not only our students’ skill and creativity, but also their emotional reach. Audiences cheered throughout both nights of the show, supporting the dancers each step of the way.

Special thanks to Mr. Joel Wesley, who handled lighting and sound for the production, and to Ms. Sally McKay-LePage, director of arts programs, for her support of the dance program at TCS.

Our dancers didn’t have much time to rest, as the following week, on February 27th, they headed to Cobourg Collegiate Institute for the Lakeshore Dance Festival. It was a wonderful experience for all involved!
