In conjunction with Black History Month, Trinity College School’s Black Student Alliance (BSA) hosted its fourth annual Black Alumni Night the evening of Thursday, February 22nd, welcoming an online panel of alumni speakers to reflect on their lives at TCS and beyond. Here, BSA student leaders (Golden Onyekere and Sienne Taylor) reflect on the event:

“The Black Alumni Night at Trinity College School, as recounted by the student leaders, highlighted the positive impact the School had despite the students being in the minority. The relationships formed at TCS were deemed crucial, with friendships remaining strong even after graduation. For many alumni, being at TCS was eye-opening, providing a valuable perspective they hadn’t encountered before.

“While at TCS, the alumni felt well-prepared for university life, especially in terms of discipline and time management. They noted that university did not have the same amount of discipline, however TCS well prepared them to self-moderate their time management, advising current students to be prepared for this transition. The alumni also emphasized the importance of seeking out supportive communities in university and the workforce, especially in environments where they may not feel entirely comfortable.

“The discussion also touched on career paths and personal growth. Alumni shared advice such as being a go-getter, focusing on personal development, and not being afraid to change course if needed. They highlighted the value of networking and making lifelong connections, as well as the importance of finding a job that benefits both the individual and the company.

“Overall, the event underscored the significance of the TCS experience in shaping the alumni’s identities and careers. It served as a reminder to current students to embrace new experiences, value their friendships, and be confident in their uniqueness, even when faced with challenges.”
