Mathletes collaborate in team contest

Trinity College School mathletes joined peers from independent schools across Ontario for a day of challenging fun at the Canadian Team Mathematics Contest hosted by Pickering College on Monday, April 15th.

The CTMC is part of the math and computing contest program created by the Centre for Education in Mathematics & Computing at the University of Waterloo. The program includes a number of contests written at school throughout the year, as well as the team event.

The day included a 45-minute team test, where each team of six students was able to split up 30 questions any way they liked, working without a calculator to solve them. This was followed by a 45-minute individual test.

Then, the event concluded with the always fun relay test. Here, teams split into two groups of three and named each group member either A, B or C. Person “A” needed to finish their question and pass their solution to person “B,” who used that solution to help find the answer to their question, and then passed their solution to person “C,” who needed it to find the final answer.

Chaperoned by Ms. Brandy Carriere from the Senior School mathematics department, two teams represented TCS at the event, with one team finishing fifth overall (out of 15 teams). Moreover, the contest was a wonderful opportunity for our students to hone skills of creativity, communication, collaboration and critical thinking.

Thank you to our hosts from Pickering College, and a shout-out to Branksome Hall for finishing in first place. It was a great day, and our students enjoyed challenging themselves, making new friends and celebrating a shared love of math!
