  • Sports Update: Volleyball, Squash, Basketball, Alpine

With CISAA league playoffs on the horizon, Trinity College School’s sports teams are putting their best foot forward in an effort to make the post-season. Read on for updates from our volleyball, squash, basketball and alpine skiing teams in recent days.

Bigside Volleyball: The Bigside girls team travelled to Country Day School on Wednesday, February 1st and, even after arriving late, took care of business in three sets. All players had a chance to hit the court in the match and contributed to the win. In fact, eight different players had hitting attacks! Golden Onyekere earned “Scrappy Bear” honours based on her efforts. Overall, the team worked well to communicate effectively after a quiet start. Players on the bench were tasked to lead this charge by sending good vibes after each point. They took this challenge and ran with it!

On Monday, February 6th, the team headed to Hillfield Strathallan College, where the Bears swept the match, 3-0 (25-17, 25-22, 29-27). The team served well, spread the offensive attack and played its most spirited, determined game of the season! “Scrappy Bear” nod, once again, went to Golden, for a huge block that ignited a spark in the team.

Bigside wrapped up the regular CISAA season against Ridley College on Wednesday, February 8th. While the Bears lost in a tight, back-and-forth five-set match (18-25, 25-14, 25-18, 23-25, 15-17), all of the players posted strong statistics that auger well for the upcoming playoffs. Some highlights:

  • Téa Efovi – 11 aces, 90% serving accuracy, 5 kills, 1 block
  • Olivia Dagher – 90% serving accuracy and 2 digs
  • Lizzie Wadds – 4 blocks
  • Marie Anne Urrutia – excellent libero play
  • Emilie Vahramian – 3 kills and 2 blocks
  • Liv Conacher – 100% serving accuracy, 2 aces, 5 kills
  • Sophia Masur –  stellar setting in game 3
  • Golden Onyekere – 14/15 from the service line
  • Mimi Grieve – 2 aces, 3 kills, 4 blocks

Bigside Girls Squash: The team was thrilled to be able to host its annual invitational tournament once again this year! Bigside welcomed Havergal College and Branksome Hall, with almost 30 players taking the courts of the Ernest Howard Squash Centre. The teams brought great energy to the courts, the best the coaches have seen in years! Congratulations to Branksome’s Zoe Chong, who was the big winner on the day. Bigside girls squash is looking forward to the CISAA Championships, taking place Thursday, February 23rd at the Mayfair Lakeshore Club in Toronto.

Basketball: Bigside boys basketball notched another win, defeating Holy Trinity School by a score of 75-39 in front of the home crowd in the Sue Burns Gym on Wednesday, February 8th. That same day, the Middleside boys were on the road at Country Day School, where they posted a 44-43 win. Both teams are set to wrap up the regular season next Monday, February 13th, with Bigside at Appleby and Middleside at Toronto French School.

Alpine Skiing: TCS skiers took part in their final regular season CISAA meet on Wednesday, February 8th, at Caledon Ski Club. The high school trained males team took top spot overall, with the open females team in third place, and both the open males and high school trained females teams in fourth place.
